Japan and Germany have enjoyed close and friendly relations for almost 150 years. "Germany in Japan Year 2005" is aimed at further strengthening the traditionally good relationship between the two countries. This year and next, Germany will be staging a wide range of cultural, business and academic projects in Japan designed to provide the Japanese public with an insight into modern German life and the many facets of Germany. An important aspect of this will be to present Germany as a leading high-tech industrial nation in the heart of Europe. ThyssenKrupp supports this important initiative.

The relations between Japan and ThyssenKrupp's predecessor companies Thyssen and Krupp date back to the time of the Meiji Restoration in the mid-19th century and are characterized by a mutual exchange of knowledge and experience together with successful collaborations. As early as 1859 the Prussian envoy Friedrich Graf zu Eulenburg brings a rolling machine manufactured by Krupp as a gift on one of his journeys to Japan. This first step prepares the ground for the commerce treaty between Prussia and Japan which is signed in 1861.

ThyssenKrupp aims to expand its presence in China. "We intend to develop our activities in China, we are looking into further projects and conducting intensive discussions with a number of Chinese partners," said Dr.-Ing. Ekkehard D. Schulz, Executive Board Chairman of ThyssenKrupp AG, in Beijing ahead of the establishment of the new national holding company ThyssenKrupp (China) Ltd.

The Chinese market is growing rapidly, and ThyssenKrupp Automotive as a supplier of components, modules and systems for the body, chassis and powertrain areas is meeting that growth head on. Whereas China produced around 2.1 million vehicles in the year 2000, that number more than doubled to 5.2 million in 2004.
